FWS*: Reading Simone de Beauvoir (Spring 2026)
This course will examine some of the central themes in Simone de Beauvoir’s philosophy, including existentialism, ethics, and feminism. This course will explore these themes with a focus on writing. Student will learn how to reconstruct an argument that is embedded in intricate philosophical text, and how to critically analyze the text. Readings will include chapters from Beauvoir’s novel The Women Destroyed, her short essay Pyrrhus and Cineas, and excerpts from The Ethics of Ambiguity and The Second Sex. This course will introduce students to the above themes with a focus on writing. It will familiarize students with basic skills to read, interpret, and analyze difficult philosophical texts. Students will develop important skills to write philosophical papers such as argument reconstruction and critical evaluation.
FWS: Death and Anxiety in Existential Thinking (Fall 2025) Syllabus
This course will examine the topic of death and anxiety in existentialist thinking. For existentialist thinkers, contemplation on death and anxiety is not only useful but necessary for self-understanding and self-development. Thinking about death and anxiety properly will reveal the most fundamental conditions of human being as finite existence. Readings in this course will include short pieces by Søren Kierkegaard, the novel All Men are Mortal by Simone de Beauvoir, excerpts from Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time, and from Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness. This course will introduce students to the above themes with a focus on writing. It will familiarize students with basic skills to read, interpret, and analyze difficult philosophical texts. Students will develop important skills to write philosophical papers such as argument reconstruction and critical evaluation.
